What is Social and Emotional Learning?
Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children develop the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed to understand and manage emotions, build positive relationships, make responsible decisions, and successfully navigate social situations.
For young children, social and emotional development is just as important as cognitive development. Before children can fully engage in learning, they need to feel safe, valued, and emotionally secure. They also need opportunities to develop self-confidence, express their feelings appropriately, cooperate with others, and solve interpersonal problems.
Within the PLAYER-Cs Framework, SEL is not taught as a separate subject. Instead, it is embedded throughout everyday learning experiences. During play, group work, discussions, and reflection, children naturally practice recognizing emotions, communicating with others, resolving conflicts, and making responsible choices.
SEL supports the development of resilient, empathetic, and confident learners who are prepared not only for school but also for lifelong success.
